Who can change or cancel your flight ticket?

Changes, cancellations, and schedule disruptions can involve different rules depending on who sold the ticket. Start by identifying the ticket issuer, then choose the right contact.

First, find who issued the ticket

Check your confirmation email and card statement. Find the airline or travel agency that completed the sale. A six-character booking code may not show who controls the ticket.

A travel agency may not have access to a ticket sold elsewhere. You may need to contact the original seller.

  • Passenger name exactly as ticketed
  • Travel dates and route
  • Airline confirmation code
  • 13-digit e-ticket number
  • Original place of purchase

When to contact the airline directly

Contact the operating airline for same-day flight problems. It is also the best contact for airport help, airline rebooking, or a flight that leaves soon.

  • You are already at the airport
  • Departure is within a few hours
  • You need wheelchair or accessibility assistance at the airport
  • The airline canceled or significantly delayed today's flight
  • Your baggage is delayed, damaged, or missing

What may affect a change or cancellation

The result can depend on the fare rules, ticket issuer, airline policy, and route. The reason for the request also matters. Check whether the airline changed the flight.

A change may include both an airline charge and a difference in fare.
